The clitoris is the small visible portion at the front junction of the labia minora which are the inner lips of the vagina, above the opening of the urethra which is the urine tube. It looks like a small penis head and contains similar sensory characteristics, but it does not possess any openings.
In transgender women, the clitoris can help achieve sexual excitation and pleasurable orgasms. Trans women prefer to have a clitoris to satisfy themselves sexually and also develop an identity as a full-fledged female with their partners.
Creating a new clitoris or clitoroplasty can be performed individually or along with vaginoplasty which is the process of creating a neovagina.
Penile inversion is most commonly performed for creating a vagina along with a clitoris. Here, the surgeon makes an incision between the rectum and the urethra, and the prostate. This forms a tube-like structure and makes up the new vaginal tunnel. The surgeon lines the inner vaginal walls with the penile skin.
Then, a small part of the penis head is used to create a new clitoris. The erectile tissue present in the penis will be reduced or removed so the entrance to the vagina and the clitoris don’t get overly swollen due to sexual arousal. However, the new clitoris does retain its sensitivity.
If your penis is damaged or removed earlier in a different surgery, you must discuss it with your surgeon beforehand as penile inversion will fail or is not possible in such cases.
