Remove Penis & Testicles (Nirvana Surgery)
Indian transgender women have a tradition of undergoing Nirvana (Enlightenment) Surgery which includes the amputation of their penis and testicles without creating a vaginal shape. Medically, this is an essential treatment for terminating male hormone production and reducing masculine characteristics in the transwoman’s body.
Dr. Sanghvi offers a safe Nirvana surgery in India to ensure that transgender women can lead a psychologically stable and confident life in their communities and our society.
How Is The Nirvana Operation Performed?
A Nirvana operation is a combination of removing the penis and the testicles. Following are the medical procedures that will be performed in this surgery:
Orchidectomy (Removing The Testicles)
An orchiectomy is a surgery done to remove both of your testicles in a transgender woman making the transition from male to female gender change. It helps eliminate testosterone production the occurs in the scrotum, helping in indirect secondary feminization.
The surgeon performs this procedure through simple orchidectomy where two incisions, each approximately 2 inches long, are made in the groin area. The testicles are then removed through these incisions and then closed using dissolvable sutures.
It also allows a transwoman to discontinue anti-androgens and high-dose estrogen therapies, saving them a fortune.
Penile Amputation (Removing The Penis)
Here, the entire externally visible girth of the penis along with its head is removed to get rid of the erectile characteristics. It is typically performed under local or general anesthesia.
The surgeon carefully cuts off the external penis structure. The urine tract is inside the body is preserved to allow urination after the surgery. Immediately after the surgery, a tube will be attached to the urine tract to help the patient urinate until the incisions heal.
